In the Icelandic mind, success is the reward for personal daring, ingenuity, improvisation, and an eye for the main chance — just as it was in the Viking times. Its experience differs greatly from that of other European nations, many of whom (Scandinavian cousins in particular) view Icelanders’ confidence as either childishly unrealistic or insufferably arrogant. When the characteristics are considered, the similarities between the history and attitudes of Icelanders and Americans come into view.
